Three environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit today in Washington, D.C. to try to stop environmental damage caused by the Cypress Creek Town Center development in Pasco County.
The Sierra Club, Clean Water Action and Gulf Restoration Network filed the 50-page lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for violations of federal environmental laws.
The development is near the headwaters of the Hillsborough River.
Denise Layne, with the Sierra Club Inc., said one purpose of the lawsuit was to have the development permit pulled until a better environmental study can be done.
Another part of the lawsuit asks that environmental destruction of wetlands be avoided rather than mitigated, according to Layne.
A lot of land has already been cleared for the Cypress Creek Town Center, though construction has not yet started, she said.
Layne is concerned by the number of violations that have already occurred, and fears they could escalate once construction begins.
