Debate aftermath: Inside the GOP Spin Room11/29/07 Mitch E. Perry
WMNF Drive-Time News Tuesday
After the debate, reporters and film crews ventured into the Spin Room in the Mahaffey Theater, where supporters of the candidates explained why their candidate did so well during the debate.
Actually, one candidate showed up in the room – Southern California Congressman Duncan Hunter.
The debate began with a fiery exchange on who is tougher on illegal immigration. New York Congressman Peter King said Rudy Guiliani got the better of that battle.
Attorney Ben Ginsberg is a major player in Republican politics. An elections and campaign finance lawyer, Ginsburg was involved with the Swift Boat Vets For Truth, and provided national counsel for George W. Bush during the tumultuous Florida recount in 2000. He’s supporting Mitt Romney, and said he thought Romney looked better than Guiliani in their immigration fight.
Conservative commentator Bay Buchanan was positively beaming after the debate. She’s the sister of famed conservative Pat Buchanan, and a supporter of Tom Tancredo. A big critic of illegal immigration herself, she says Tancredo’s message has now infiltrated the entire GOP field, and she couldn’t be happier.
Rich Galen, a Republican strategist and former press secretary to Dan Quayle and Newt Gingrich, is now a senior advisor for Fred Thompson's campaign. Galen praised his candidate, but took more of an analyst's role in assessing the entire field last night.
