Floridians of Puerto Rican descent are livid at comments made by Brooksville area Congresswoman Ginny Brown Waite earlier this week, when she said that Puerto Ricans living on the Island are “foreign citizens “ who should not receive the benefits of the economic stimulus plan that Congress is debating.

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Puerto Rico’s official representative in Washington, D.C., Eduardo Bhatia, has written a letter to the congresswomen calling her comments “not only wrong, but highly insensitive.”

He wondered if her comments “stemmed from sheer ignorance about Puerto Rico” and listed some helpful facts for the next time Brown-Waite decides to comment on island issues.

The Sentinel reports that many Puerto Rican activists in the Orlando area are extremely angry, and are contemplating a protest in front of her local district officices.

The Florida Democratic Party also seized the opportunity to criticize Brown-Waite.

Congresswoman Brown-Waite’s office did not respond to requests for a comment.
