Should Tampa bargain harder with TECO?02/19/08 Robert Lorei

Former Hillsborough County Commissioner Ed Turanchik joined us in this segment to talk about the negotiations between the city of Tampa and Tampa Electric over the new franchise agreement for the utility company. The previous 25-year agreement has expired.
This time around some environmentalists in the city want energy conservation, buried power lines and alternative enrgy generation to be required in the new agreement. Cities have reduced power (because of changes in state law by the Legislature) to make such demands. But Turanchik, who is now a private home builder, wants the city to take a more aggressive posture in requiring the electric utility to practice more energy conservation.
The Tampa City Council will hear public comments about the franchise agreement Thursday at 9 a.m.
