For years, the Hillsborough County Commission has recognized Confederate Memorial Day. But after being criticized last year for honoring Confederate Gen. Robert Lee on the same day they honored a local civil rights leader, the board reversed course.
Commissioners Kevin White, Rose Ferlita, Mark Sharpe and Al Higgenbotham refused to sign the proclamation.
Those four, though not named, were criticized by citizen David McAllister, during the public comment portion of today’s County Commission Meeting. McAllister minced no words, saying those who wanted the proclamation felt disciminated, dishonored and dismissed.
He asked where did the bias and prejudice stem from? McAllister put the onus on Hillsborough County NAACP President Curtis Stokes, who at the time that the Board honored Robert E. Lee said it was a slap in the face of every African-American, Hispanic and minority in Hillsborough County.
