Good afternoon, welcome to WMNF's Radioactivity…I’m Rob Lorei… in a moment we’ll hear about a pioneer progressive Florida politician from Lakeland … but first some listener comments about last Thursday’s program with members of the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority- TBARTA who were discussing the upcoming public meetings about the future of mass transit here in the bay area.

First up today – local author Dorothy Smiljanich has written a biography of one of Florida’s most colorful political figures—former state senator Scott Kelly- her book about Kelly is called, Then Sings My Soul: The Scott Kelly Story.

Smiljanich, a former reporter for the Tampa Tribune and the St. Petersburg Times, writes about Kelly, one of Polk County's most charismatic politicians. Kelly grew up on a tobacco farm in the Panhandle, became a state senator form Polk County, and nearly governor - losing twice in bitter campaigns filled with intrigue.
