Election day is next Tuesday in Florida. Other than judges, there aren’t that many sexy races on the ballot.
In Hillsborough, the most interesting race is the Democratic County Commission race in District 6. It features three high-caliber candidates. Kevin Beckner is a 37-year-old financial planner who has been campaigning hard for over a year. He faces off against environmentalist and former Republican Denise Layne, and perennial candidate Joe Redner.
On Sunday, Layne told the St. Petersburg Times that she would have beaten Mark Sharpe in the race for County Commission in 2004 if it weren’t for Redner’s participation. Sharpe beat Layne 49 to 41 percent, with Redner taking 10 percent.
At the Tampa Bay Muslim Community Candidate Forum in Tampa on Sunday, Joe Redner told WMNF he couldn’t disagree with Layne’s comment.
In the Republican contest for District 6 next week, incumbent Brian Blair faces off against Don Kruse.
