New face running as a Democrat in Tampa state race listen09/10/08 Mitch E. Perry
WMNF Drive-Time News Wednesday | Listen to this entire show:
Recently, the Hillsborough County Democratic Party was embarrassed after GOP state Representative in District 56 Trey Traviesa dropped out of his race for re-election. In the equivalent of a smoke filled room, Hillsborough Republicans selected little known 26-year-old Rachel Burgin, a former assistant to Traviesa, to run in Traviesa's place.
Hillsborough Democrats were embarrassed because it looked like a ripe opportunity for them to perhaps to snatch a solidly Republican seat. But the Democrats had already a qualified a little known candidate named Lewis Larricha, and so it appears the seat likely will stay with the GOP.
However, the Democrats are fielding a candidate in District 57, which includes much of South Tampa against Republican Faye Culp. It’s Democratic Party activist Yvonne Yolie Capin. WMNF met up with Capin last month, and talked about her candidacy.
WMNF plans on speaking with Republican Faye Culp about this race on a future newscast.
