Sixty-one men and women without homes died this year in Hillsborough County. Wednesday night The Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County held a memorial during the Homeless Persons’ Annual Interfaith Memorial Service.

In downtown Tampa’s Joe Chillura Courthouse Square a list of names were read and candles were lit in honor of those who have died. Community leaders gave speeches and The Tampa Oratorio Singers sang for the fifty people at the memorial. Rayme Nuckles, CEO of the Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County, said homelessness could happen to anyone, especially in today’s economy.

It happened to Gregory Johnson who moved to Tampa two years ago from Washington D.C. He went from working as an office manager to living on the streets.

Nuckles said Hillsborough County needs more space to accommodate people who need shelter.

Johnson said there is no single face of homelessness and it occurs in many forms

Johnson said he thought some Florida laws should change and people without homes should not be arrested for sleeping wherever they can.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandra Murman said she is working to help get the problem solved.

Rayme Nuckles hopes anyone who needs shelter will call the Homeless Coalition at 813-223-6115.
