Hillsborough County Commissioners today awarded the Moral Courage Award to Dave Brown, a Sun City center retiree.
In accepting his award, Brown singled out his wife for her support.
Several of Brown’s neighbors in the South County area joined him in his celebration. Brown’s advocacy in questioning county maps that erroneously listed thousands of homes in a flood zone ultimately saved those homeowners from having to buy flood insurance.
And he took up the issue involving a county requirement that residents with sprinkler systems using ponds in Sun City and Apollo Beach need to buy expensive backflow valves – a devise country regulators said was necessary to prevent them from drinking contaminated water.
Several County Commissioners praised Brown.
Last month, the County Commission renamed the award for the late Ralph Hughes, a pro-development conservative power broker who donated to many Republicans over the years.
Two weeks ago, the 1996 recipient of the Moral Courage Award in Hillsborough County, Eileen Hart, returned her trophy to protest renaming the award for Hughes.
