The Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s Sherri Silk told the Tampa City Council this morning that they will give out free shots to pets of city residents this Saturday.
“It’s going to be at Sulphur Springs Park from 10 until 2.” The first 500 residents can get free rabies, distemper and parvo immunizations.
Silk said last year the Humane Society of Tampa Bay facilitated nearly 5,000 adoptions and more than 10,000 low-cost spays and neuters. Silk said they are beginning this free vaccination program because of the region’s economy. Shelters flooded food assistance requests lately can’t afford shots.
Donor dollars were used to purchase the vaccines and the county will provide licenses and free leashes.
Silk predicted that a free shot program could be a regular feature in the future, as long as the economy remains depressed.
