LOCAL NEWSPAPER CREATES NATIONAL UPROAR - Mitch Perry

04/13/04

A local St. Petersburg news weekly made national news today after it was publicized on Matt Drudge's Website and on Rush Limbaugh's Syndicated radio show......

The paper is the Gabber, and the reason it made its way into the Right Wing media Vortex as because of an ad placed in it by the St. Petersburg Democratic Club...WMNF's Mitch Perry reports:...

The Ad - in the April 8th edition-, entices those who are angry at the Bush Administration's ongoing war in Iraq, to make a financial contribution to the John Kerry Campaign.

But what led Matt Drudge to highlight the ad in a blazing headline shortly after noon today is a line in the ad that Drudge said called for physical retribution against Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

The offending paragraph begins as follows: "And then there's Rumsfeld who said of Iraq,"We have our good days and our bad days." The next and offending line reads, "We should put this SOB up against a wall and say, "This is one of our bad days', and pull the trigger. Do you want to salvage our country? Be a savior of our country? Then vote for John Kerry and get rid of the whole Bush Bunch!"

The ad lists the number of those killed and wounded in Iraq, and then lists phone numbers for St. Petersburg Democratic Party officials.....

WMNF called The Number for Vice President Edna McCall....An angry man came on the phone and said it was the wrong number and to stop calling...

Calls to St.Pete Democratic Club Head Ken Steinke -also listed on the ad, went unanswered.

Ken Reichart is the Publisher of the Gabber, based in Gulfport..with a circulation of about 15,000 readers.....He spoke to WMNF around 1PM this afternoon, after only an hour after Limbaugh and Drudge went public with the offending ad
