Currently, there are three candidates running for the Democratic nomination: a state Sen. Kendrick Meek, former House Minority Leader Dan Gelber from Miami Beach, and North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns.
Meek is a former state legislator who was first elected to Congress in 2002, taking over the seat held for years by his mother, Carrie Meek. If Meek were to win, he would be the first black to hold statewide office in Florida.
Senior Strategist Steve Hildebrand says the new fundraising numbers should quell any thoughts that he’s not a serious contender in the race.
Tampa based Political Consultant Ana Cruz is a Senior Advisor for the Kendrick Meek Senate campaign.
Of the $1.4 million dollar raised so far, Cruz said $400,000 came from two fundraisers that supported former President Bill Clinton.
Several Republicans are waiting to see whether Gov. Charlie Crist runs for a second term or seeks the Senate seat. Former House Speaker Marco Rubio has formed an exploratory committee, but has not made a formal announcement.
