Interfaith group: Use stimulus money for green jobs in Tampa04/16/09 Robert Lorei
Radioactivity: Live Call-In (Thursday) | Listen to this entire show:
Our guests in this segment were Dr. Warren Clark, a retired minister, and Stuart Berger of the Pinellas Jewish Federation. They are part of a group called FUSE, Faiths United For A Sustainable Economy. They came to talk about two upcoming events. The first is an Earth Day Fair at Unity Church of Clearwater from 6 to 9 p.m. April 22 at 2465 Nursery Road in Clearwater. They will also make a presentation for green jobs at the Tampa City Council next Thursday at 9 a.m.
Dr. Clark writes: "Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa are excited about getting the $11.4 million in energy efficiency stimulus money. A new group, Green Jobs for the People, has formed to call for 20 percent of funding for area green jobs training and placement in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act go to persons who have been marginalized in the old fossil fuel economy, including people coming out of prison, from poor neighborhoods, immigrants, and people with low educational levels. We have presented this concept to the Hillsborough County Stimulus Task Force, and urge them to broaden their scope. Green-collar jobs could help us conserve resources, create new sources of energy, and give our area the power to grow our economy again in ways that reflect our deepest values of inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunity for everyone. Now, that is a real economic stimulus agenda!"
