They now call themselves the White House Boys though they are men in their 60s and 70s. They were only boys when they entered into the state-run reform school in the 1960s, now they are coming forward with tales of harsh abuse by their instructors.
Some scars are still visible, others were buried deep beneath the skin. Their story, titled For Their Own Good, was printed Sunday in the St. Petersburg Times. A six-month investigation by reporters Ben Montgomery and Waveney Ann Moore, and Photographer Edmund Fountain.
Last week WMNF’s Arielle Stevenson, sat down with Montgomery and Fountain of the Times. She began by asking how the story of the White House Boys began as just a single item and turned into a major investigation.
