They now call themselves the White House Boys though they are men in their 60s and 70s. They were only boys when they entered into the state run reform school in the 1960s. Now they are coming forward with tales of harsh abuse by their instructors.
Some scars are still visible, others were buried deep beneath the skin. Reporters Ben Montgomery and Waveney Anne Moore and photographer Edmund Fountain spent six months investigating the story. Titled For Their Own Good, the story was printed Sunday in the St. Petersburg Times. Ben Montgomery and Edmund Fountain spoke with WMNF’s Arielle Stevenson last week.
