St. Petersburg House Democratic Representative Daryl Rouson is an admitted former drug addict. Since he beat his addiction, he’s been at times zealous in trying to ensure that others don’t make his mistakes.

In 2005, he stood trial on a charge of misdemeanor trespassing for a 2004 incident in a St. Pete head shop called the Purple Haze. He claimed that he had gone to the store to protest the selling of drug paraphernalia, which he called "death utensils."

And on one of the last days of the regular session in Tallahassee earlier this year, he wore a construction helmet with crack pipes taped to it.

WMNF spoke with Rouson earlier this month at a Democratic Party fundraiser in St. Petersburg. District 55 encompasses parts of Manatee and Sarasota counties.
