WMNF Drive-Time News Tuesday | Listen to this entire show:
St. Petersburg voters go to the polls two weeks from today. In addition to Mayor, they will select five City Council members.
Even though during August’s primary election, voters could only choose from Council candidates in their own district, during the November general election all St. Petersburg registered voters can vote for all five contested seats.
Today WMNF begins our series of interviews with all ten candidates for City Council, where we will ask about some of the topics of this campaign, such as a Rays’ stadium and the BayWalk sidewalk vote.
We begin with a look at the District 8 race between challenger Leonard Schmiege, who we’ll hear from in a few minutes, and the current chair of the City Council, Jeff Danner, who was one of the three votes against giving a sidewalk to BayWalk last week.
In a St. Petersburg Times/Bay News 9 poll released over the weekend, Danner had a 24 percent to 8 percent lead over his challenger, Leonard Schmiege, who also opposed the vacation of the sidewalk at BayWalk.
Tune in tomorrow for the second part of our coverage where we will hear from the District 2 candidates for St. Pete City Council.
The election is November 3rd and all St. Pete residents can vote in all five district races.
