Miami officials announced today that their city’s Police Chief is stepping down. Chief John Timoney says he will stay on the job until a new chief is selected. Also today, newly elected Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado was sworn in. He has indicated he wanted to remove Timoney from the position.
Timoney was Miami’s police chief for seven years, but many activists remember him best for how he handled protests in 2003 against the Free Trade Area of the Americas, or FTAA. Tampa activist Kelly Benjamin was shot by police at that demonstration and then won part of a monetary settlement from Miami and other jurisdictions.
