Earlier this year a group of businessmen proposed that Hillsborough County consider selling some of the 12,000 acres of pasture and scrub land in Eastern Hillsborough County known as Cone Ranch to a non-profit called the Florida Conservation and Environmental Group. In turn that organization wanted to subdivide Cone Ranch into six 2,000-acre parcels and resell the parcels to private owners. A smaller plot -- 800 acres -- would remain in public hands.
Environmentalists and others are concerned about the proposal. And they think the privatization proposal is not in the public interest.
We’re joined now by Kent Bailey and Mariella Smith a member of the ELAPP General Committee which recently re-ranked Cone Ranch among the top priorities for acquisition.
