Tampa-area state representative Michael Scionti has been appointed deputy assistant secretary of defense for intergovernmental affairs and homeland defense.

Scionti said today he will resign from the legislature on December 13th

WMNF attempted to contact Representative Scionti but he did not return our calls by deadline.

Patricia Kemp, chair of Hillsborough Democratic Party, is confident the Democrats will keep the seat in a special election. Kemp is the wife of WMNF program director Randy Wynne.

U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, who is running for Senate, issued a statement today that read, in part, “State Rep. Michael Scionti is the embodiment of public service.”
