A Federal report shows that the Florida manatee death rate is seven times the sustainable level. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service released their stock assessment report on manatees, which says that boat collisions account for the vast majority of manatee deaths.

In 2007 The Center for Biological Diversity sued U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for not releasing a stock assessment report on manatees since 1995. The Service agreed to prepare a stock assessment report annually as part of the settlement of the lawsuit.
