As oil continues to gush into the depths of the Gulf, jeopardizing delicate ecosystems and vital industries, politicians from across the spectrum are decrying offshore drilling. One Florida Democrat and US Senate hopeful says he questioned the practice before opposing offshore drilling was cool.
US Representative Kendrick Meek, a Democrat running for US Senate in a candidate pool that includes Governor Charlie Crist and tea party superstar Marco Rubio, said in Tampa Saturday he has always been wary of drilling for oil off Florida’s coasts.
Numerous politicians, including the ultra-conservative Rubio, have shifted their stance on offshore drilling in the past week. Governor Crist revoked his support just ahead of his announcement that he was leaving the Republican Party. Meek said Crist only did so because it’s politically convenient.
