Our guest on the first part of today's program is NYU education historian Diane Ravitch who has written a new book about high-stakes standardized tests and school choice: "The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education." In the 1960's she was part of the Left side of the political spectrum. But she grew more conservative over time- joining the Education Department under George H. W. Bush. She backed the new generation of conservative reforms- such as vouchers for private schools. But after spending time as part of the conservative movement- she's moved back to a more liberal direction. Now- she's not only a critic of school of school vouchers-- but also of such bi-partisan programs such as No Child Left Behind, charter schools, high stakes standardized tests, and merit pay for teachers. All of these ideas have been at the heart of a fierce debate here in Florida about how to improve k-12 education since Lawton Chiles was governor in the late 1990's. Diane Ravitch welcome to WMNF....
