Before the House passed the extension of unemployment benefits this afternoon, we asked U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor for her reaction to the imminent legislation.
"Well to all of our neighbors who have struggled in this worst recession in our life time, finally the U.S. Senate was able to muster the vote to pass the unemployment compensation bill. The house will take it up today and President Obama will sign it right away. But these are people who have payed into the insurance, the unemployment compensation fund, and they rightfully should be able to tap that money as they struggle to find work. It's particularly difficult throughout Florida. While things are getting better, we simply can not turn our backs on our neighbors. That little bit of unemployment compensation could help keep them in their home; could keep their food on the table for their families. So I'm very grateful that we're able to pass that bill today and get it to President Obama's desk."
