As the weekend begins, many people will head for their local air-conditioned movie theatre. But South Tampa residents and other film fans may be disappointed tonight, as the 9-month-old Madstone theatre closed earlier this week. Part of a national chain of 13 Madstone theatres which offered smaller budget movies and foreign films that often wouldn’t be shown in larger theatres, the Tampa branch of Madstone was one of only 3 around the country that was actually making a profit. But along with Atlanta and San Diego, the other two Madstones that had found financial support in their communities, the old Hyde Park theatre fell victim to the collapse of the larger corporate organization. WMNF sat down with Margaret Murray, manager of Tampa’s Madstone outlet, about the future of the theatre, which she says is bright.
