Today Florida's Attorney General Bill McCollum threw his support behind a proposed harsh immigration law. It will be introduced by Representative William Snyder of Stuart. McCollum says that, if passed, the law would require police officers to check immigration status during some stops.
Parts of a similar Arizona law were put on hold by a federal judge after their constitutionality were challenged. But McCollum says the proposed Florida law would avoid the legal problems plaguing Arizona's.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida expected a similar bill to be introduced in last month's special legislative session. Their executive director Howard Simon says they will challenge it if passes.
