In the days since Ronald Reagan died, many news outlets have suggested that without Reagan, the Soviet Union would still be around. Our guest was Stephen F. Cohen, a Nation contributing editor, a professor of Russian studies and history at New York University. His latest book is Failed Crusade: America and the Tragedy of Post-Communist Russia (Norton, 2000), which has recently appeared in an expanded paperback edition. Cohen attended several meetings between Reagan and Soviet President Gorbachev in the 1980's. Cohen said the USSR was well on the way to liberalization in the 1980's and that Gorbachev put out the first peace feelers to the U.S.
