Good afternoon, welcome to Radioactivity. I’m Rob Lorei. Today we present a debate on the proposed one cent sales tax increase in Hillsborough County. This issue is on the November 2nd ballot. The money would be used to improve roads, the bus system, and most prominently to build a light rail system. If it’s built, Hillsborough’s light rail system would be the anchor to a region wide system, which if approved by adjacent counties would connect the region with an integrated transportation system. But opponents say not so fast- that light rail is expensive and the tax increase would hurt Hillsborough County residents at a time that they are still feeling the effects of the recession. Here to debate the proposed transit tax are David Singer of a pro-rail group called Moving Hillsborough Forward. Also here is Sharon Calvert who is president of a group called No Tax For Tracks.
