CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION - Mitch Perry07/15/04
The Tampa City Council met for the first time in 3 weeks today.....As the Council's Meeting room is being remodeled, today's meeting was held at the Tampa Convention Center, which is where the next several meetings will take place as well.
A couple of City Council members - most notably, Rose Ferlita, have objected to a new directive issued by the Iorio administration - that all city business conducted by Council members with staff members take place AT CITY HALL.
Ferlita, who works at her Seminole Heights Drug Store when not fulfilling her duties on the Council, spoke out against the declaration (roll tape#1 o.q." need to accomplish")
Ferlita explained that requiring meetings involving City business to take place only on City Hall grounds limits her effectiveness as a Councilperson. She says she is working on cutting walls on her Drug Store, so she can create a Conference Room, so if staff visits her at the store, she can guarantee very few interruptions.(roll tape#2 o.q."often times")
And then there was this dig from Ferlita to the man enforcing the regulation from the Administration, Mayor Iorio's Chief of Staff Darrell Smith (roll tape#3 o.q."I can do")
City Councilmember Kevin White Says he thought the Administration was acting a bit heavy handed in demanding that all meetings involving City Business be on City grounds
(roll tape#4 o.q."of abuse")
But when it was said and done, Chief of Staff Darrell Smith said, the only way City Council members would be able to off site, would be thru him(roll tape#5 o.q. " approved by me")
