A Deeper Look at Recent Russian History
Good morning, welcome to Radioactivity. I’m Rob Lorei. Coming up today we’re going to get some background on what’s happening in Russia. We’ll put some of the recent headlines in context with a leading American scholar of Russia.
President Barack Obama's decision to pull out of a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next month is yet another milestone in the steady decline in relations between the two countries. President Obama canceled a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next month. The move follows Russia's decision to grant asylum to former U.S. contractor Edward Snowden.
Our guest on the first part of today’s program is Paul Josephson. He received his PHd from MIT and he’s a professor of Russian and Soviet history at Colby College in Maine. He’s written several books including An Environmental History of Russia (Cambridge, 2013) and The Conquest of the Russian Arctic (Harvard, forthcoming, 2014). He’s also a frequent visitor to Russia.
