Ariane Hegewisch with the Institute for Women's Policy Research talks about equal pay for women.
Ariane Hegewisch, a study director for the Institute for Women's Policy Research, talks about the recent vote preventing discussion of the Paycheck Fairness Act. She discussed the history of the equal pay act in the USA and the very slow progress from 59 cents to the dollar in 1963 to the present 77 cents to the dollar in 2012. At this rate, it will take until 2056 for women to catch up. She particularly noted the problems for women in the restaurant industry where the pay for hour has been frozen at 2.31 per hour since 1991. Ariane made many suggestions for young women to be aware of the wage discrepancies and what fields offered more opportunities for young women.
