Ayele Hunt, the founder of I Am Choice, talked about Amendment 6 and the importance of understanding its implications. Ayele noted there are two parts to the Amendment. The first part is the denial of any public funds for any abortions except to save the life of the mother. This would extend the sense of public funds to include public employees and would extend to their insurance coverage. This represents an extension of the Hyde Amendment. The second part of the proposed Amendment is to restrict the use of the privacy clause in the Florida State Constitution. The Florida State Constitution has more privacy rights than the US Constitution containing a clause that says the government may not intrude in the personal privacy of individuals. This privacy clause has been used in court challenges to many of the Florida legislative proposals to restrict the right to abortion for women or to impose delaying and other tactics that undermine a woman's sense of choice even her capacity to make such a choice.
