Burned pages from Quran found outside Tampa office of CAIR
The executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Tampa, Hassan Shibly, told WMNF he found burnt pages from the Quran outside the CAIR Tampa office Thursday morning.
He later posted a photo of the charred remains on Facebook.
Another CAIR employee, Samantha Bowden, posted on Facebook that she found it when she stepped out of her car in the morning. She said a report was filed with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, but it was not yet considered a crime because it wasn't burned on site.
In other Quran-burning news, a Tampa Bay-area pastor was arrested Wednesday as he drove a pickup truck towing a large barbecue-style grill filled with kerosene-soaked Qurans to a park in Polk County. Pastor Terry Jones had said he was planning to burn nearly 3,000 of the Muslim holy books â one for every victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Polk County Sheriff's deputies arrested Jones and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., each on a felony charge of unlawful conveyance of fuel. Jones had said he was heading to a nearby park in Mulberry to burn the Qurans.
Sheriff's officials said that Jones was also charged with unlawful open-carry of a firearm, a misdemeanor, and that Sapp faces a charge of having no valid registration for the trailer.
The two men paid a $1,250 bail and were released from jail this morning.
