For years, Tampa’s streetcar has linked Ybor City with tourist destinations in the Channel District nearly two-and-a-half miles away, but has stopped short of connecting with downtown. But as of last month, that changed. An extension by one-third of a mile into downtown Tampa cost $5.3 million. It was funded mainly with federal money, including about $1 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Peter Rogoff, the Federal Transit Administrator with the U.S. Department of Transportation, was in town today for the grand opening of the streetcar extension.
