Happy Birthday America

Last Call Wednesday

We're Celebrating the 237th birthday of the United States of America and asking, how are we stacking up against Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence penned back in 1776 ”We hold these truths to be self-evident” Jefferson wrote ”that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…”

The debate over applying Jefferson’s truths to everyday life rages on two centuries after he wrote them down. The miracle is that the Union still stands. It’s hard to remember a time in our lifetimes when the country was more deeply divided. Yet save the rag-tag Occupy Movement, Americans are either satisfied or pacified…the depths of despair suffered by our poor, the loss of wealth handed the middle class, the soaring wealth of the few…none of it has sent our citizens to the streets…this is not Cairo.

Happy Birthday U.S.A.!

Our guest E.J.Salcines is the son of Spanish immigrants who became one of Tampa’s most respected natives.
