Ivan Penn on problems at Progress Energy Florida's Crystal River nuclear plant
Today weâre going to talk about the Tampa Bay areaâs nuclear power plant, Progress Energyâs Crystal River plant. Itâs not in service now and customers are paying extra to the utility for more expensive power.
The reason the Crystal River plant is off-line is that in 2009 a large crack was found in a containment wall. Customers could also be on the hook for the expensive repairs that our guest has found may have been too risky for the utility to perform in-house. Ivan Penn is a staff writer for the St. Petersburg Times and he joins us now.
