In his new book THE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION (Random House), economist Jeffrey Sachs says that civic virtue is declining among America’s political and economic elites. He says the US system of markets, laws and elections is not enough if the rich and powerful have no compassion toward the rest of society. He says the two major political parties are in the hands of corporate lobbyists and wealthy contributors. That tax cuts and stimulus spending don’t work. That the military industrial complex has led to catastrophic wars and military occupations. And that taxation is the price of civilization.

Jeffrey Sachs joins us right now.

Sachs is the director of the Earth Institute and Columbia University.
