Julie Wyman talks about her documentary Strong07/26/12 Mary Glenney
From A Woman's Point of View | Listen to this entire show:
Julie Wyman the director and producer of Strong discusses her documentary. Strong follows the path of a gender pioneer in an unconventional sport, weightlifting. Cheryl Haward was an American national and an Olympic champion. Cheryl was the youngest athlete to medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Strong takes us into the rarefied world of elite athletes but as well challenges the stereotypical notions of health, size, and beauty. Cheryl competes in the 75 Kg and over class and we see her deal with the cultural and social responses of society to her "bigness". Many of Julie's experimental documentaries investigate the body, seeking to explore the notions of power, physicality, and gender categories. Strong is being shown nationally on the Independent Lens series on PBS on Thursday, July 26 at 9 p.m.
