Occupy Tampaâ€™s first anniversary is today â€“ how did it start?
A year ago today Occupy Tampa held its first rally; it was small compared with what was to come, but represented the first step in a movement that continues today.
Blake Westlake organized the first Occupy Tampa rally in downtown's Gaslight Square on September 24, 2011. It was the site of the first several Occupy Tampa gatherings.
Two weeks later a group moved to a sidewalk along nearby Curtis-Hixon Waterfront Park for their first overnight "occupation" of public space. That would be the visible base of Occupy Tampa until December when they moved to Voice of Freedom Park in West Tampa.
Over the weekend Occupy Tampa held a general assembly to plan for their anniversary commemoration. On October 1 ...
"We will assemble at Gaslight starting at 2pm, eventually get to our old home of Curtis Hixon for Sign holding around 5pm (for rush hour!) â€“ celebrate with donated food and cake and end the day with a Peopleâ€™s General Assembly around 7pm at Kiley Gardenâ€™s Amphitheater."
