October 2011 Movement plans civil disobedience in Washington DC
Coming up today we'll talk with two members of a group that, in the tradition of pro democracy rallies in Egypt and Wisconsin, are planning to occupy a public park in Washington DC next month. Our guests are Rev. Bruce Wright from St. Petersburg and Lisa Simeone. Both are organizers with the October 2011 Movement. According to the group's press release: "The October2011 Coalition is a group of activists and organizations that support peace and social, economic, and environmental justice. Thousands of people from all over the country will join us on October 6, 2011, to begin a non-violent occupation of Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. to demand that our voices be heard. October 6th marks ten years that we have been in Afghanistan. It marks the beginning of the 2012 so-called austerity budget that will bring pain and suffering to the middle-class and poor, and further enrichment to the already wealthy.
"We demand that our leaders represent us, not just the top 2%. We demand that they tax the rich, bring our troops home, and end corporate personhood.
"We will arrive at Freedom Square on October 6th, but we will not pack up and leave at the end of the day. We will stay. We are willing to risk arrest. Americans have asked, âWhere is our Tahrir Square? When are we going to do what our brothers in sisters in Spain, in Greece, have done?â This is our answer. We are committed to non-violent resistance. We will stay as long as we have to.
"Here is our Mission Statement. Here is our FAQ page. And here is our Pledge, a pledge that thousands of people have already taken -- people such as Ann Wright, Baldemar Velasquez, Chris Hedges, Coleen Rowley, Cornel West, Cynthia McKinney, Ralph Nader, Ray McGovern, Sibel Edmonds, Medea Benjamin, Ted Rall, and many more."comments powered by Disqus
