BILL TO CURB CITIZEN INITIATIVE MOVES IN STATE SENATE - Mitch Perry

This morning in Tallahassee, the Senate Criminal Justice Committee held a hearing on Senate Bill 1996, known as the “The Petition Fraud and Voter Protection Act� that would make it much more onerous for citizens to collect petitions to get a Constitutional Amendment on the Florida Ballot.

Critics say the proposed law creates 8 different ways to invalidate signatures collected by petition, including threatening jail time for Floridians with jail time up to 5 years for not turning...

Dade studies switch to paper ballots

In 2001, Hillsborough County spent $12 million dollars to install touch screen voting systems. Virtually every other county in the state did as well, in the aftermath of the 2000 Presidential Election in Florida.

Now, the biggest County in the state to use touch screen – Miami Dade – has been asked to study eliminating the system in favor of paper-based balloting.

Alex Busansky, the executive director of the national commission discussed the upcoming hearings in Tampa, the first in a series. The bi-partisan commission will look at violence, sexual abuse, crowding and staffing at the nation's prisons and make recommendations about reform.

Al From, the CEO of a conservative wing of the Democratic Party- the Democratic Leadership Council is warning that MoveOn and Michael Moore have become the wrong "public face" of the Democratic Party. From says the party must be a big tent but that the the left-wing activists are turning off mainstream people. He says the party should re-focus efforts not on registering/turning out new voters- but capturing "frequent voters".

Over the weekend, St Pete Times published an extensive report that finds Tax breaks given by State and local governments to businesses relocating to Florida often cost the state more than they bring in.
