Two years ago, University of Miami Professor Eugene Provenzo co-authored with his wife, Asterie, the book â€œIn the Eye of Hurricane Andrewâ€?, a comprehensive oral history done with the collaboration of students participating in the Hurricane Andrew Oral History Research Project.

INTRO: In the past, the Cuban vote in Florida has historically gone to hard line Republicans who have been tough on Fidel Castroâ€™s regime. At the same time, Floridaâ€™s Cuban population have annually ferried money and medicines to their families on the island. This afternoon in Tampa, Florida's U.S. Senators, Democrats Bob Graham & Bill Nelson, held a joint news conference where they announced that the 3 major Democrats running to replace Senator Graham had signed a pledge agreeing NOT to engage in a campaign that will disparage the character or public service of the other candidate.

Last Friday economists were stunned by the paltry job numbers for July. Expected to be at least 200,000 new jobs created, the Labor Department reported that there were only 32,000.
Before that news, economists - and certainly Bush Administration officials - have been trumpeting that the economy has been on the upswing....But Poll numbers consistently show differently, as the American public shows signs of anxiety about the economy. As representatives of the US and Panama meet inside Tampaâ€™s Downtown Marriot this week to negotiated a trade agreement, a coalition of community groups are calling for greater transparency in the process. Meanwhile, an attorney for several same sex couples is trying to use NAFTA in a lawsuit filed today against the state of Florida, to try and make the state respect a marriage conducted in Canada. The lawsuit calls on both the United national treaty on human rights and NAFTA, its says that both these international agreements signed by the United States, stipulate that the US must honor any legal contract from Mexico or Canada. Gay marriage is legal in Canada.
