Russia’s lower house of parliament was expected to vote today on ratification of the Kyoto Protocol on combating global warming, putting the pact firmly on the road to realisation.

The pact needs ratification by 55 industrialised nations accounting for at least 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 1990. Once the protocol enters into force, industrialised countries will have until 2012 to cut their collective emissions of six key greenhouse gases to 5.2% below the 1990 level. ...

Last night the university of Tampa democrats held a round table discussion on national security, featuring a member of the 9/11 commission, a soldier returning from Iraq and the father of a victim of the September 11th attacks. The focus of the discussion was the failure of the war in Iraq and how President bush has redirected the resources, which could have been used to protect Americans, and instead invaded Iraq without a plan.

LATINO ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY - Mitch Perry

Latinos suffer from more environmental hazards than the rest of the population, but also don't get the information they need to protect themselves, a study just released says. The report by the Natural Resources Defense Council notes that a large percentage of Latinos live near heavy-pollution areas, like industrial zones and agricultural operations, putting them at greater risk of asthma, cancer and other conditions. In this morning’s NY Times, reporter Rick Lyman was given unrestricted access to troop members in Iraq, to discuss who they support in the Presidential Election.

He reported that some soldiers felt uncomfortable expressing criticism of their commander in chief or expressing support for John Kerry - in particular because the military is now and has been for decades, predominantly Republican.

POLLS SAY FLORIDA EVENLY SPLIT IN PRESIDENTIAL RACE - Mitch Perry

A new poll suggests Senator Kerry has pulled even with President Bush in Florida.

The Quinnipiac University survey of 808 likely voters put Bush at 48 percent and Kerry at 47, well within the three and a-half percent margin of error.

A Quinnipiac poll two weeks ago had Bush ahead 51-to-44 percent.

DEBATE FOR PINELLAS COUNTY COMMISSION-Andrew Stelzer

There are 4 seats of the Pinellas county commission up for election this November 2nd, but 3 of them have the incumbent leading by wide margins. Commissioner Barbara Sheen Todd is stepping down, leaving the race for her at large countywide seat open for competition. The two major party candidates are Ronnie Duncan and Norm Roche, and they debated this afternoon at a meeting of the Suncoast tiger bay club in Clearwater. AMENDMENT 5 ON MINIMUM WAGE - Jen Germaine

Florida House Representatives Arthenia Joyner and Bob Henriquez came out today, in downtown Tampa, to speak about voting YES on Amendment 5.

In the park, across from the County Center, where people were lined up for early voting, Representatives Joyner and Henriquez, joined about 40 members of ACORN, to support the state's minimum wage increase from $5.15 to $6.15 per hour.
