Last Thursday night, the Tampa City Council voted to support a resolution advocating the revision of portions of the controversial anti-terrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act, which passed Congress weeks after the 9/11 attacks.

Our guests were Dave Cooper and Ben Brown of Kentucky. They described mountaintop removal coal mining and what it is doing to the mountains and communities of Appalachia. Cooper lives in Lexington, Brown lives in a little town called McRoberts, Kentucky that is being flooded repeatedly because TECO took off the tops of the mountains surrounding the town. In 2002 they had five major floods due to mountaintop removal.Be the first to comment
Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Buddy Johnson told the Tampa Tribune today that County Commissioner Pat Frank CAN keep her Commission seat while campaigning for the Clerk of Circuit Court.....

Last month a premature baby born to an inmate at the Hillsborough County Jail died shortly after her birth......In a subsequent investigation, a nurse practitioner was fired ......The 34 year old inmate - Kimberly Grey, in custody at the time on prostitution and cocaine charges, said she pleaded for medical help for 12 hours before giving birth to the boy in an infirmary restroom in early March.

The Tampa Electric company, or TECO, will be forced to defend themselves in front of the Public Service Commission next month, over charges they did not conduct an open bidding process for transporting coal, and they over charged consumers in the process. But this week TECO has accused the consumer group that is bringing the challenge, of not really representing consumers, and instead working as a tool of TECO corporate competitors. Russell Train, the former EPA administrator from 1973- 1977 under Presidents Nixon and Ford, discussed his memoir, POLITICS, POLLUTION, AND PANDAS (Island Press, November 17, 2003). His main message is about the bipartisan origins of all of our major environmental laws and regulations and the need to get to that political framework. Yesterday Tampa Police arrested 3 activists, accusing them of violating a city policy by feeding the homeless at a downtown park.
That Policy was the subject of a protest and a public feeding this morning in front of the Hillsborough County Courthouse in downtown Tampa
