The Florida state board of education held their monthly meeting today in Tampa; school board chairman Phil handy said that some of the challenges facing the board in 2005 will be hiring 30 thousand new teachers needed by august, trying to stop social promotion, work to meet the demands of the classsize amendment, and wait for the results of a lawsuit against school choice that is currently before the US supreme court.

Today Wal-Mart unveiled a nationwide public relations campaign to try and help fight back against the bad publicity theyÃ¢â¬â¢ve been receiving from the hundreds of communities around the country. AS we reported last month, the Association of Community Organizations for reform Now, or ACORN, has been running a boycott and protest campaign of The Jackson Hewitt tax preparation chain. ACORN claims that Jackson Hewitt preys on poor people by aggressively pushing Refund Anticipation loans, and not letting people know about the earned income tax credit. As we reported last night on the Evening News, Governor Jeb Bush has outlined a plan to completely overhaul the government's health insurance program for the poor.
The plan drew immediate criticism from state Democrats, and patient advocates, who said it not only would limit health insurance for low-income families, but represents the latest step in Bush's attempt to move more and more state services to the private sector.
