As the weekend begins, many people will head for their local air-conditioned movie theatre. But South Tampa residents and other film fans may be disappointed tonight, as the 9-month-old Madstone theatre closed earlier this week. For the past nine months, the UHURU movement, an organization of activists who advocate for the self-determination of black people, have been holding demonstrations at Baywalk shopping center in downtown St Petersburg every Friday evening, to protest what they say are rules that unfairly target young black people. But tonight, there will be no demonstration.

Last night, the Hillsborough county commission heard arguments for and against installing a living wage for county employees and contractors. In October, the county created a 6-member task force last year to study the economic impacts of setting a standard living wage for anyone who works for the county as an employee or contractor. Earlier this week an environmental watchdog group says a Florida Panhandle landfill with a long history of environmental violations is a prime example of law oversight by Florida's Department of Environmental Protection.
The DEP Permit issued a permit in August of 2001 for a landfill near Panama City. The landfill was owned by Big Wheel Recycling of Alabama, whose directors were under federal indictment. They now are in prison for convictions on mail fraud, money laundering and cons...Be the first to comment
According to a study by a Latino group released last month, Hispanics could account for 1 million new voters in the presidential election, giving the fast-growing group additional clout in hotly contested states like Arizona and Florida.

A van pulling a 1000-pound slice of a 400-year-old tree stump came to Tampa today. The piece of stump came from a tree that was cut down by logging operation which many people say should be stopped, it came all the way from Oregon as part of the Ancient Forest Roadshow, an effort to educate the public about how few to protect the few remaining old growth forest remain in the United States.
