In honor of their six month anniversary, Occupy Tampa is returning to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The group abandoned the sidewalk in front of that park where they had been sleeping each night to camp at Voices of Freedom in West Tampa. Occupy Tampa’s Joe Jay said the move is needed to amp up the group’s presence as this summer’s Republican National Convention draws near.

The Tampa Police Department will be purchasing 200 bicycles costing nearly $1,600 each for use during the Republican National Convention in August. This week, officers from five law enforcement agencies across the state are being trained on how to safely patrol from a bicycle. Tampa police captain Brian Dugan said there are several reasons why a bicycle patrol program will help with security efforts during a convention that is expected to draw 70,000 visitors.

Tampa City Council unanimously approved the purchase of more than 6 million dollars in radio communication equipment. This morning Tampa City Council approved the purchase of $2 million worth of surveillance cameras and the contract to service them through August’s Republican National Convention. Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor says the closed circuit video cameras will help with crowd control.
“Our goal is to have a very safe, secure, enjoyable RNC. Our focus is obviously on the safety and security of that event. We also have the goal of being good stewards of the grant or federal tax dollar.”
