Monday in Orlando faith leaders and immigrant students held a prayer rally to reform the nation’s immigration system.
Minutes before the rally was to begin, WMNF spoke by phone with one of the organizers, Rev. Errol Thompson, pastor of New Life Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Orlando.
He’s also chair of PICO (People Improving Communities for Organizing) United Florida.

Over the weekend, basketball fans were focused on Orlando, host of the NBA All-Star Game and associated festivities. But the group Occupy Orlando held their own, less flashy, celebration they called “All Share Weekend.” They billed it as a time for community, food, entertainment, art and education … all without the huge price tag of the All-Star Game. Activist Cat Duerr said the march was coordinated with the Florida Civil Rights Association.

Tuesday in Orlando there will be a Congressional hearing on Florida’s water pollution rules. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has imposed numeric nutrient standards on Florida’s water bodies, but they’re being challenged by some business groups. This afternoon in an Orlando courtroom a Pinellas County jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murdering her 2-year old daughter. She was found guilty on four counts of lying to investigators. If Anthony had been found guilty of first-degree murder, she could have faced the death penalty. After the verdict, Anthony’s lead defense attorney Jose Baez said he was pleased with the verdict and spoke out strongly against state murder.

On Wednesday Orlando police arrested six more people in Lake Eola Park for sharing food with the hungry. That brings the total number of people arrested in conjunction with the Orlando Food Not Bombs events to twenty-one.
