The sixteen day government "shutdown" ended last Thursday. But as we'll hear in this next interview the shutdown left some government operations untouched. Mattea Kramer of the National Priorities Project provides some perspective on the winners and losers. Mattea Kramer co-authored with Jo Comerford, the article “What Was ‘Essential’ and What Wasn’t, The Government Shutdown in Perspective” and she joins us now.

Edna Adan, from Somaliland, who is featured as one of the women who is making a difference in HALF THE SKY: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide discusses her background. Edna was born under the British Protectorate and was the first girl/woman to get an education in Somaliland even though there were no schools for girls. She listened in the back of the class and took the tests in a separate room and did so well she was given a scholarship to study in Britain.After many ...
