Yesterday, the nationwide specialty grocery store chain, Trader Joe’s, signed a landmark agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. It guarantees the company will pay one penny more per pound of tomatoes picked by immigrant farm workers in South Florida. Methyl iodide is a controversial pesticide that has been approved for use in agricultural fields in Florida and California despite vocal opposition linking it to cancer and other ailments. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers has reached an agreement with another food giant to increase wages for tomato pickers. The food service company Aramark will pay an extra penny and a half per pound for tomatoes picked in Florida, and most of that premium will be distributed to the workers. The farmworkers of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) have been on a campaign for better wages for Florida tomato pickers.
